Weekend Lunch Program

“If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,” and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. – James 2:15‭-‬17

What We Do

Since the mid-1990’s, the Weekend Lunch Program at Christ Church has provided nutritious meals for low income, homeless, hungry and less fortunate in a safe and enjoyable space where laughter is often heard. We have many invested program partners, including churches of many denominations, community groups and inspired individuals, who sign up for 4-6 weekends throughout the year. Through the guidance of their Team Leader, each group of volunteers provide nourishment to an average of 320 meals each weekend.

Where and When

Meals are served and prepared in Jones Chapel at Christ Church located on Walnut Street Lane. Every Saturday and Sunday, our doors open for our guests at 12:00 and close at 1:00 pm.

Getting Involved

Each weekend, on Saturday and Sunday, a team of 8 – 10+ volunteers come to prepare the food, serve the guests, and clean up after the meal. The team of volunteers arrive at Jones Chapel around 9:00 a.m. to prepare the space and then start prepping and cooking. At noon, guests are welcomed into Jones Chapel and served the day’s meal. From 1:00 until 1:30, teams clean and close up the chapel.

Many teams signup for multiple weekends year after year finding Weekend Lunch to be an important spiritual practice. Our Ministry is always looking to develop new teams and acquire additional volunteers and support. If you’re unable to serve the entire day, short shifts of 2 hours are available; 9:30am to 11:30 and 11:30 to 1:00.

This ministry works especially well for people who have a limited amount of time to commit, yet want to participate in a meaningful, charitable outreach ministry to the poor, lonely, and marginalized within our community.
