2020 Annual Report
Dear People of Christ Church,
This marks my seventh year serving Christ Church, and I am grateful to be a part of this incredible parish. Our music program continues to provide a level of musicianship which surpasses my expectations. We are a blessed people and have such a vibrant and highly-respected Music Ministry throughout Macon, Central Georgia, and the Diocese of Atlanta.
Last year began with wonderful singing and praising God through hymns and anthems in our beautiful and historic Nave. This was abruptly brought to a halt in March. With help from many we quickly adjusted to online worship. The Christ Church Choir continued to provide beautiful and meaningful music for our online worship experiences. We were very fortunate to have an archive of previously-recorded music and this greatly assisted in our efforts to provide the same high-quality hymns and anthems from our Anglican tradition. As time progressed, we became more familiar and comfortable recorded anthems, hymns, and service music as individuals to later be combined as a choir. Thank you to the Christ Church Choir and all those who helped make this happen. These wonderful new gifts culminated in a beautiful service of Advent Lessons and Carols as well as our online services for Christmas. We also provided music for the in-person services in the Memorial Garden. This usually consisted of a soloist or two and an accompanist. We were also blessed to have newcomer Kathy McCollum share her musical talents on the harp for the Christmas Pageant and the Christmas Eve service. 2020 is certainly a year we are all ready to put behind us, but because we have such wonderful and dedicated musicians, we were able to offer a musical experience worthy of this great parish.
I am delighted to announce that the Vestry has approved a new role for the musical and liturgical life of this parish. I will be stepping down as Parish Administrator and will now serve as the fulltime Director of Music & Liturgy. This new role will allow me to focus on the musical and liturgical offerings of Christ Church, as well as maintain and expand our online worship presence. I have many goals for the coming months and years and I will need your help to accomplish them. One of the most important of these is to rekindle and foster our Children’s Music Ministry. If you’ve been to a service when the Christ Church Choristers have assisted in worship, you have truly experienced the greatness and love of God’s creation. They are all extremely talented, hardworking, and well-behaved musicians and it gives me great pleasure to be their choirmaster. With further nurturing and encouragement, the Music Ministry for Children and Youth will continue to blossom. Music is an essential element in worship to God, and I look forward to the day when we can return to the Nave and praise our Lord through hymns, anthems, and songs of praise. Music transports and transcends all things. It is often said that “those who sing, pray twice.” Christ Church is a singing church, and for this, I am well-pleased!
How may I better serve this parish as its Director of Music & Liturgy? What will be your contribution to the musical life of this parish?
From the Epistle of Saint Paul to the Colossians. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.” (Colossians 3:16)
Because of your continued love and support, the Music Ministry at Christ Church is alive and thriving! Thanks be to God!
“Soli Deo Gloria”
